Returning with Purpose: Ukraine, Freedom, and the Power of Hope

So much has happened in the last few months, both in the big picture of Ukraine and the world, as well as in our efforts at Ukraine Freedom School. Our fundraiser and strategic planner, Lisa Barr, hit the ground running and has created an opportunity to expand our impact exponentially. You can see this by simply looking at our webpage, Instagram, and other platforms.

For me, returning to Ukraine in less than a month reaffirms the hopes and dreams that we are moving towards a better world. The ideals of freedom may take a beating from time to time, but they are firmly entrenched in the heart of Ukraine. I hope they are in your head and heart as well.

During the time that I’m there, I look forward to working with our Ukrainian personnel to help them further develop the programs that we have started and to assess what we are accomplishing. I have several other goals while I’m there, but one of primary importance is to meet with Lynn Welton, who shares a similar vision to our organization. Lynne has been teaching English in Ukraine since the fall of 2022, currently capping a distinguished career teaching English in conflict areas. Of course, I also want to visit friends and family there, and hopefully return with some great art as well.

Lynne’s last project with senior high school students in Bucha gave her insight into the importance of teaching English in Ukraine, and not just to the children alone. With luck, we will find the time to get a tour of Bucha and explore possibilities of helping Lynn accomplish her goals. All in all, I’ll have about three weeks in Ukraine. Wish me luck!
